It's possible to have a beautiful garden without breaking the bank or spending endless hours on upkeep. Keys to success: choose reliable performers, plant them in masses, and use mulch.
An excellent place to start is with the garden classics. These are perennials that remain popular for good reason. They require little care and are reliable performers in the garden. Select from this list for backbone plants, the ones to use in large groupings and repeat along the length of the perennial border -- Rudbeckia 'Goldsturm', Hemerocallis 'Stella de Oro', Echinacea 'Magnus', Achillea Colorado Mixture, and Phlox 'David'. All are long-bloomers that play well together. Add the cool hues of violet and lavender-blue with Salvia 'May Night' and Nepeta for a lovely border. Incorporate more architectural contrast by tucking in a Sedum or two and some tall Ornamental Grasses to create a garden that will give you great pleasure and satisfaction for many years.
