Depart aboard our deluxe motorcoach for three garden-packed days in beautiful Vermont. Our first stop is the Rogers garden, known as Rogerland, in Arlington VT, where we will have a picnic lunch before a guided tour. The property combines two very different houses and garden styles - a symmetrical, structured, formal English garden around an 1830 farmhouse and a minimalist, locally traditional garden around a more modern ranch. A dry river bed divides the two styles, and there are many water features, iron fenced kitchen gardens, topiaries, and patios rounding out the property. Key to the garden is the merging of the structured hardscape—stone walks and dry-laid walls, many sitting areas, extensive custom iron work—with the softscape—thousands of perennials, annuals, trees and shrubs. Different areas include a putting green, lawn bowls, "Alice-in-Wonderland", alpines, a granite raised-bed vegetable garden, vineyard walk, hops production, and seven different water features. After check-in at the Kimpton Taconic Hotel in Manchester, there will be leisure time before a welcome dinner at the Copper Grouse.
We begin the day at Hildene, the Lincoln Family Home, during its “Celebration of Peonies”, when thousands of flamboyant flowers bloom and fill the garden with color. Our visit will include the Goat Dairy, a garden presentation by Hildene Horticulturist Andrea Luchini, sampling of Hildene cheeses and a self-guided tour of the Formal Garden and the Lincoln Family Home, followed by a catered lunch. After lunch, explore the cutting and kitchen gardens, the Pullman Car, Sunbeam and/or browse and shop in the Museum Store. We’ll next travel to the Stroup garden in Manchester, featured in "Country Gardens" in 2015. The property includes grassy fields dotted with 12 artful sculptures, ornamental pergolas, a stone-lined arroyo, and mowed paths leading the eye through tall grass, over foot bridges, and through the woods into themed garden rooms. We’ll complete the day by joining author, award-winning food and garden writer and kitchen garden designer Ellen Ecker Ogden in her own kitchen garden. Learn about the herbs, greens and edible flowers she grows and how to design a kitchen garden for beauty and ease. Sample herbal appetizers and sip on “shrubs”, a fruity herbal liqueur, with a demo on how to make them. Explore Manchester Center this evening for dinner on your own.
